About this role

The Organization:

The J. Paul Getty Trust (Getty) is a non-profit, private operating foundation and one of the world’s most influential cultural and philanthropic organizations dedicated to interpreting, preserving and displaying visual arts and cultural heritage for the benefit of all.

The Trust is comprised of four distinct Programs: the Getty Conservation Institute, the Getty Foundation, the Getty Research Institute, and the J. Paul Getty Museum. These four Programs work both independently and collaboratively to preserve and present the world’s cultural heritage through their research, scholarship, philanthropy, conservation, collections, and exhibitions.

Supported by a substantial endowment, and representing a culture of excellence, service, and innovation, the Getty operates from two architecturally significant Los Angeles campuses—the Getty Center and the Getty Villa. Getty accomplishes its work through strategic partnerships with organizations in Los Angeles and across the globe, while sharing art, knowledge, and resources with the public online, and in-person.

Getty is undertaking its largest-ever capital program, which will be shaped by a commitment to strategic and innovative stewardship and development of Getty’s remarkable spaces. This includes Tram replacement, reimagined property entrance area to include additional visitor spaces, the renovation of all museum galleries, a new energy plant, infrastructure improvements to improve fire resiliency, finalizing the renovation of a 32,000-square-foot building, and future construction at Getty-owned property in Westwood.

Position Overview:

The J. Paul Getty Trust seeks an accomplished insurance professional to lead its corporate insurance program, protecting a world-class collection of cultural assets - ensuring comprehensive coverage for permanent collections, traveling exhibitions and loans, facilities, and public programming - as well as Getty’s facilities, people, activities, and operations.

This protection of high-value, irreplaceable cultural assets must be achieved while strictly navigating the complex tax, governance, and public-access requirements unique to a private operating foundation - ensuring rigorous compliance, mitigating fiduciary liability, and managing specialized fine art exposures.

Reporting to the Executive Vice President, Finance & Operations, the Corporate Insurance Director will oversee a sophisticated and well-established portfolio of insurance coverages and claims, combining technical expertise with sound judgment, hands-on execution, and continuing to build trusted relationships across the organization and insurance markets.

Getty’s exposures are distinctive in both scale and complexity: fine art collections, exhibitions and loans; buildings and infrastructure; research and conservation laboratories; construction projects; public programming; and risks associated with operating in California.

The Director will work closely with the broker, carrier, underwriters, and with Getty colleagues to ensure that coverage, valuations, contractual protections, and claims management remain responsive to these varied needs. Responsibilities role include:

  • Designing and purchasing all corporate insurance and reinsurance coverages (Fine Arts, D&O, Property, Cyber, Workers’ Compensation, Professional Liability, etc.);
  • Managing large, complex liability claims in response to litigation;
  • Reviewing contracts in conjunction with legal and procurement:
  • Working with the safety department;
  • Overseeing Workers’ Compensation claims with the carrier and in partnership with human resources and payroll services;
  • and partnering with colleagues across the institution, medical providers, insurance carriers, and Getty leadership.

This is an opportunity for a highly experienced leader to steward and continuously refine an eminent insurance program. Success will depend on technical insurance fluency, an engaged and collegial approach to internal and external partnerships, and the ability to lead a small team while remaining directly involved in the work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, placement, renewal, administration, and ongoing evaluation of Getty’s corporate insurance portfolio, including fine arts, property, general and excess liability, directors’ and officers’ liability, cyber, professional liability, workers’ compensation, automobile, and other relevant coverages.
  • Manage relationships with underwriters, carriers, claims professionals, and other external partners; negotiate effectively and represent Getty’s interests in complex insurance discussions.
  • Partner with the Museum and Getty Research Institute, including the Registrar’s Office, on fine art valuations, collection exposures, exhibition and loan coverage, and the insurance implications of art handling, transit, storage, and conservation activities.
  • Assess and connect risks across the organization, including physical assets, fire and natural hazards, erosion, security, technology and cyber, construction, laboratories, transportation, public access, and governance-related liabilities.
  • Oversee significant insurance and liability claims, coordinate with carriers and external advisers, and partner with Legal, Human Resources, and operating teams to achieve sound and timely resolution.
  • Collaborate with appropriate internal departments on insurance provisions, indemnification, and risk allocation in contracts, construction agreements, loans, and other arrangements.
  • Oversee workers’ compensation insurance and related claims in partnership with Human Resources, carriers, and medical providers; coordinate return-to-work and injury-related matters within the agreed division of responsibilities.
  • Work collaboratively with Facilities, Security, and other teams responsible for enterprise safety, emergency preparedness, physical inspections, and hazard mitigation, providing insurance and claims expertise without owning those functions.
  • Identify practical opportunities to optimize coverage, limits, deductibles, costs, and claims outcomes while preserving the strength of Getty’s existing program.
  • Lead and develop a small insurance team, setting clear priorities and remaining personally engaged in technical, administrative, and relationship-management responsibilities.
  • Provide informed advice to Getty leadership and contribute insurance perspectives to broader organizational risk discussions and internal audit activities.

The Leader:

Preferred Experience & Qualifications

  • Substantial commercial insurance experience, ideally gained through an insurance carrier, brokerage, high level adjusting or claims practice, or sophisticated corporate insurance function; experience across complex property and casualty risks is particularly relevant.
  • Strong command of insurance placement, coverage analysis, claims, underwriting relationships, and the commercial and contractual dimensions of risk; able to navigate sophisticated insurance markets and counterparties.
  • Exposure to fine arts or other high-value, specialized assets is preferred but not essential; intellectual curiosity, humility, and the capacity to learn Getty’s collections and museum-related exposures quickly are critical.
  • Ability to see connections among diverse exposures—including cyber, security, property, fire, natural hazards, D&O, and workers’ compensation—and translate them into coherent insurance decisions.
  • Exceptional relationship-building skills, with the credibility to work with senior underwriters and brokers and a collaborative, service-oriented style with Human Resources, Legal, Facilities, Security, and other internal partners.
  • Practical, detail-oriented leadership style: comfortable making strategic decisions, managing a small team, and rolling up sleeves to execute without extensive infrastructure.
  • Sound judgment, analytical rigor, discretion, and an appreciation for preserving an effective existing program while pursuing thoughtful improvements.
  • Candidates with strong potential and demonstrated insurance sophistication will be considered even without extensive people-management experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; relevant designations such as CPCU, ARM, or CRM are advantageous.

Travel:

  • International travel once a year to meet with London-based underwriters.

Compensation:

  • Getty offers competitive compensation, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment.
  • For this position, the base salary range is $225,000 to $250,000. Internal equity considerations and the average salary of the peer range will be reviewed before making a final offer.
