Description
Reporting to the CEO, the CFO will provide financial expertise to business planning and ensuring collaboration across the Senior Management team to support overall organizational growth and plans. This position will work in conjunction with the CEO and Board of Directors to set the strategic plan and maintain responsibility for the leadership of all aspects of Finance for the organization including financial planning, reporting and analysis, budgeting, funding, accounts receivable/payables, cash management, and payroll processing and administration. The CFO will work collaboratively with other members of the management team to help support operational excellence.
Along with ensuring that employees and departments comply with finance and procedures, the CFO will seize every opportunity to improve funding and appropriately work to manage costs and facilitate efficiency in operational processes associated with all aspects of the operations. The CFO must be able to show leadership but also work as a team by sharing their knowledge and expertise. Most importantly, the CFO will promote the organization’s philosophy and organizational culture.
Strategic Direction and Monitoring
The CFO partners closely with the CEO, Board, and senior leadership team to guide long-term organizational planning and execution. This includes evaluating and implementing business strategies, translating strategic goals into financial and administrative processes, and providing financial insights that support informed decision making. The role ensures KPIs are established, monitored, and met, while leading financial initiatives that align with overall strategic objectives.
Business Process Improvement
The CFO reviews departmental structures and identifies opportunities to strengthen efficiency and effectiveness across the organization. This includes overseeing the development, documentation, and implementation of business policies and procedures, particularly within finance and administration, to ensure organizational processes remain current, compliant, and optimized.
Human Resources and Leadership
The CFO provides strong leadership and direction to the Finance Department, fostering a supportive and high performing team environment. Responsibilities include mentoring staff, promoting professional development, and ensuring cohesion within the department. The CFO also oversees compensation, recruitment, and training for designated positions, while implementing best practices to support the team’s success.
Financial Reporting and Oversight
The CFO oversees all financial functions, including forecasting, budgeting, analysis, and reporting. This involves monitoring organizational performance, preparing financial forecasts, and ensuring clear communication of financial information to senior leadership. The CFO evaluates budget to actual performance, strengthens internal controls, and ensures the organization’s financial reporting is accurate, timely, and aligned with organizational goals.
Operational Finance Management
The CFO is responsible for key operational finance tasks, including approving journal entries and payments, overseeing month end close processes, and presenting financial statements and variance analyses. The role involves reviewing program budgets, funder reports, and grant documentation, as well as conducting program financial analysis. The CFO also monitors cash flow, reviews bank activity, ensures compliance with fiscal responsibilities, and performs additional duties as assigned by the CEO.
Requirements
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
Minimum of 7 to 10 years of progressive experience in financial and business administration, with at least 3 to 5 years in a senior leadership role
Demonstrated experience in nonprofit financial management, including grant administration and fund accounting.
Proven track record of working with boards, auditors, and external financial stakeholders.
Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, fund accounting, and regulatory compliance.
Expertise in financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and audit processes.
High proficiency in financial software and systems (e.g. Dynamics 365 Business Central, SAP)
Ability to manage multiple funding sources and ensure compliance with grant and donor requirements.
Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to interpret complex financial data and present actionable insights.
QUALITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Strong organizational, time management, and multitasking skills, with consistent attention to detail and adherence to processes.
Excellent communication abilities, including clear presentation of financial information to nonfinancial audiences and effective interaction at all levels of the organization.
Demonstrated ability to analyze data, interpret information, and prepare financial reports, statements, projections, and budgets, with solid knowledge of finance, accounting, and ASNPO standards.
Proven problem-solving, decision-making, and troubleshooting skills, with a proactive, self-starter approach and the ability to adapt in fast paced or stressful situations.
Ability to work independently or collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, fostering cooperation, respect, and effective goal setting.
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field is required.
CPA designation or equivalent professional accounting certification is required.
Advanced degree (e.g., MBA or master’s in finance) is an asset.
